Job Scam Alert

The George Municipality urges residents to remain vigilant as new scams targeting job seekers continue to emerge.

In the latest scam brought to our attention, an individual using the name Mr. Mphele is falsely claiming to be a Director in the Municipality’s Civil Engineering Services (CES) department. According to reports, the scammer contacted a victim, demanding a payment of R3,500 in exchange for a job interview and potential employment in the department. Alarmingly, the scammer possessed accurate personal details of the victim, which he claimed to have obtained from the Municipality’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) database.

This is not an isolated case. Similar scams have been reported in recent months, where fraudsters impersonate EPWP personnel to extort money from job seekers. In these cases, victims are instructed to send money via money transfer services with the false promise of securing a spot on the EPWP employment list and receiving a uniform.

Important Notice to the Public
The George Municipality does not and will never request payment for job interviews or employment opportunities. If you are approached by anyone demanding money for employment within the Municipality, please report the incident immediately.
