Weather Alert: South African Weather Service warns of disruptive rain expected on level 9

Warning valid Sunday, 24 September 2023 from 13h00 – Monday, 25 September at 23h00

Areas impacted by disruptive rain – all municipal areas of the Garden Route – Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Bitou, Oudtshoorn, and Kannaland.

An intense cut-off low-pressure system is expected to produce showers and thundershowers over the Western Cape from Sunday into Monday. From Sunday afternoon; some of these thunderstorms are expected to be severe over the Garden Route district, including other areas in the Western Cape. This will result in rapid heavy downpours, excessive lightning, strong downdraft as well as large amounts of small hail.

The Garden Route District Municipality appeals to residents to be alert and cautious. If on the road, avoid flooded areas and rivers and be ready to move to higher ground, if necessary.

Remember to keep pets safe.

The South African Weather Service warns Thunder storms is to escalate from level 6 to 9 today and into tomorrow.
The Municipality appeals to residents to be alert and cautious. If on the road, avoid flooded areas and rivers and be ready to move to higher ground, if necessary. Remember to keep pets safe. Unplanned water outage: Update on the low flow of water, Skuinsbank Street, Herold’s Bay

Skuinsbank Street continues to experience low water flow after a water pipe was damaged in the Street. All households have flowing water but houses that have more than one storey will not have flowing water on the upper floors. Teams will continue work in the area on Saturday.
George Municipality apologises for the inconvenience and appeals that water be used sparingly to allow pressure to increase in the network and water to reach high-lying areas.

 NOTICE TO ALL ENTREPRENEURS / INFORMAL TRADERS IN THE CITY OF GEORGE

TO APPLY FOR AN INFORMAL TRADING STAND FOR ONE YEAR.

The George Municipality acknowledges the relevance and contribution of informal trading to the socio-economic growth of the area. The informal trading sector provides a means of generating local business opportunities for people and bringing income and job opportunities into the communities. To this effect, the George Municipality hereby invites residents of George to apply for an informal trading opportunity through a fair, equal, and transparent process.

Trading stands are available at the following allocated areas:

Blanco

Pacaltsdorp

Conville

CBD:

Hibernia Street

York Street

Van der Stel Square

The following criteria will apply:

  • Certified copy of ID
  • Proof of residence
  • Certificate of Acceptability (COA) for selling any foodstuffs or beverages
  • One permit will be issued per household/family
  • The trader must personally trade on the allocated site; and
  • No food preparation will be allowed at stalls.

Eskom load shedding update – 22 September 2023

Eskom Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented at 16:00 this afternoon until 05:00 on Saturday. Thereafter, loadshedding will be suspended over the long weekend and resume at Stage 1 from 05:00 on Tuesday.

The SA Weather report has warned of an intense Spring cut-off low that is expected to affect large parts of South Africa from Saturday to Tuesday. In reaction to this, George Municipality is prepared with a contingency plan consisting of integrated services to respond to predicted disruptive rain, severe thunderstorms and damaging waves.

The Municipality appeals to residents to be alert and cautious. If on the road, avoid flooded areas and rivers and be ready to move to higher ground, if necessary. Remember to keep pets safe. The public can purchase sandbags at Agri and sandbags can be filled at the Fire Department Mitchell Street. Public Notice: Hazardous Waste Day cancelled for today – due to bad weather conditions

George Municipality Environmental Services cancelled the Household Hazardous Waste Open Day today due to the bad weather. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
The next open day for the disposal of Household Hazardous Waste is on 24 November 2023 from 08h00 to 15h00 at Outeniqua Stadium Parking, Augusta St, George.
What we take
• Motor oil, oil filters, brake fluid
• Used antifreeze
• Paint, paint thinner, turpentine
• Pesticides or herbicides
• Household batteries
• CRTs, old TVs, miscellaneous
electronics, Tyres, Fluorescent tubes and Globes

Additional Information
Bring the items you wish to dispose of in a strong box preferably in their original, labelled containers.
