NOTICE is hereby given that the electricity supply will be interrupted on FRIDAY 12 APRIL 2024 FROM 09H00 TO 16H30 for the purpose of doing alterations to the electrical mains. Consumers are warned to treat the installation as being live for the full duration as the supply may be resumed at any time within the notified period.

Should circumstances prevent the work being carried out during the abovementioned period; the work will be done on FRIDAY 19 APRIL 2024 FROM 09H00 TO 16H30.

An unexpected power outage occurred at North Street, Lake Road, 7th, and 8th Avenues in Wilderness, following the tripping of Kleinkrantz Sub-Station. An 11kV cable was found to be damaged. An electrician is in the process of isolating and restoring power. The estimated time of repair is 45 minutes.

Mop-up operations continue in George following floods in parts of George that were caused by the torrential downpours overnight. Wet and cold conditions will persist over the next few days but no further extreme rainfall is expected only intermittent drizzles. The weather should clear by this weekend.

Roads closed due to flooding
Wilderness – Die Vleie remains closed due to water levels. We continue to urge motorists to drive with caution during wet conditions.

Areas Flooded
So far, the municipality has issued 275 pieces of gunplas as a temporary relief to residents whose informal settlement structures were damaged by the floods. More gunplas requests are still being considered and issued.

Disruption to Service Delivery
Although the road into the Gwaing landfill Site is not 100% accessible, the landfill site has been reopened to the public. Motorists visiting the site must please drive with caution. Collection of garden waste has resumed. Some of our tippers have started with the collection this morning in Heather Park, Heatherlands, Glenbarrie and some have started with today’s areas (Denneoord).

The residents of George South are advised that work on the George South stormwater infrastructure , currently only under construction during weekdays, will take place on Saturdays up until 30 July 2024. Working hours will be from 07h00 to 14h00. The additional working days are required to expedite the works.

Residents are reminded that the construction area remains fully closed to the public. No pedestrians, runners, cyclists or scholars may access the construction area throughout the duration of the construction period. Flag persons and temporary road signage must be adhered to at all times.

The Municipality apologises for any inconvenience and thanks all residents for their co-operation.

We continue to urge motorists to drive with caution as the roads are wet and slippery. Please note, that the road surfaces remain wet, motorists are to proceed with caution and at reduced speed.

Areas flooded
24 residential homes reported flooding throughout the George Municipal area, including one partial collapse of a structure in Herold.

Blanco Community Hall is currently housing approximately 25 people who were evacuated in Blanco
House flooded in Uniondale, residents temporarily accommodated in Lyonville Community Hall
Up with Downs School, Blanco and VGK Primary School, Geelhoutboom have reported being affected by flooding.
A number of schools have closed for today but are communicating directly with their learners and parents in this regard.

Disaster Management Services is assessing damage in residential areas of Wilderness and at the Wilderness Water Treatment Works buildings.

Electrotechnical Services is assessing damage to infrastructure in Anchorage Lane and surrounding streets, Wilderness

Disruption to Service Delivery
The Gwaing Landfill Site situated at R102 Airport Road remains closed, due to the inclement weather and green bags will not be collected until further notice The Waste Transfer Station remains operational.
The collection of black refuse bags and recycling bags has resumed.

Rainfall over the past 24 hours
• Unconfirmed rainfall measured at the Botanical Gardens, 105mm
• Unconfirmed report rainfall measured at Buffelskop, catchment Area for Touws River, 180mm
• Unconfirmed report rainfall measured at Upper Touws River Water Weather Station, 110 mm
• Confirmed rainfall measured at Garden Route Dam, 100mm and Garden Route Dam is overflowing.
• Confirmed rainfall Uniondale, 85mm
• Confirmed rainfall Haarlem,70mm
• Confirmed Avontuur, 72mm

Temporary Road Closures
Four roads temporarily closed including Outeniqua Pass. Camphersdrift Road, CJ Langenhoven Street, Hope Street and King George Road. All roads have been reopened.

The second entrance to Waboomskraal was temporarily closed and caution was issued for water across the roadways between Oudtshoorn and the Outeniqua Pass.

We continue to urge motorists to drive with caution as the roads are wet and slippery. Please note, that the road surfaces remain wet, motorists are to proceed with caution and at reduced speed.

Areas flooded
• 17 – 20 houses have reported flooding – Areas include Hoekwil, Lawaaikamp, Borcherds, Rosedale, Blanco and Thembalethu Zone 4, 6 and 7
• Blanco Community Hall is currently housing approximately 25 people who were evacuated from Malgas Singel and Klaassen Street in Blanco
• House flooded in Uniondale; residents temporarily accommodated in Lyonville Community Hall
• Flood reporting along Touws River (Pirate’s Creek, Die Duin) following a delay in opening the river mouth
• Anchorage Lane, Wilderness – several homes flooded
• Ebb and Flow Camp Site has experienced minor flood conditions
• Flooding at Wilderness Civils Depot and Water Treatment Works. Damage is being assessed by Civil Engineering Services
• Fallen tree on Wilderness Water Treatment Works building being assessed and removed
• The river mouth has been opened by SANPARKS and is flowing correctly

Disruption to Service Delivery
• The Gwaing Landfill Site situated at R102 Airport Road has been closed, due to the inclement weather. The Waste Transfer Station remains operational.
• The collection of black refuse bags and recycling bags will resume later today. Green bags will not be collected due to the closure of the Gwaing landfill site.
• All planned vegetation maintenance is postponed for today.
• Planned power outages have been postponed for today.

Although the rainfall has decreased considerably, the George Disaster Management Services remain on standby to attend to any emergencies. The Municipality continues to monitor weather developments, and the public will be updated via George Municipal Social Media Channels.

George Municipality would like to advise the public that repair work on the Civic Centre is due to start today, 9 April 2024 and will continue until 5 May 2024. The site will be cordoned off as per Occupational Health and Safety Requirements.

All efforts will be undertaken to contain dust and noise pollution from the sanding, with disruptive work taking place over weekends and after hours.

Members of the public accessing the Municipal Court are requested to access the building with care. The municipality apologizes in advance and requests your patience during the upgrade.

George Disaster Management Services have advised that after sweeping the Outeniqua Pass together with Provincial Traffic, the road has been reopened for vehicles travelling at safe speeds.
