Tuesday, 28 June 2022: Eskom regrets to inform the public that Stage 6 loadshedding implemented

Tuesday, 28 June 2022: Due to unlawful industrial action, Eskom regrets to inform the public that Stage 6 loadshedding will be implemented from 16:00 until 22:00 this evening.

Stage 4 loadshedding will then be implemented at 22:00 – 24:00.

Loadshedding will then be reduced to Stage 2 from 24:00 – 05:00 Wednesday morning.

From 05:00 until 16:00 on Wednesday, loadshedding will be implemented at Stage 4.

Loadshedding Stage 6 will then again be implemented from 16:00 – 22:00 Wednesday evening.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN GEORGE
Rehabilitation of Saagmeul Street, George will impact on road users from July to September 2022.
 
PROJECT:
Rehabilitation of Saagmeul Street TTT
 
DESCRIPTION:
Rehabilitation of Saagmeul Street.
 
PLANNED CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES AT SAAGMEUL STREET:
The works comprise rehabilitation of Saagmeul Street, George.
Also included are some stormwater repairs and the repair of kerbs.
The length of the above road section is approximately 850 meters.
There is one lane in each direction along this section of the road, with numerous accesses to industrial properties.
The width of the road is approximately 9.2 meters.
 
PROJECT PERIOD:
July to September 2022.
 
SERVICE DISRUPTION:
Traffic congestion can be expected.
 
TRAFFIC IMPACT:
The remedial work will require the milling and removal of existing bituminous layers as well as the milling and
removal of existing gravel base layers. After the milling operations will follow the placing of new bituminous base
layers and surface layers.
The above work will be carried out in half-width road construction which can lead to traffic congestion and delays.
 
Reconstruction of block paving areas and reconstruction and repairs to kerbs will have no major traffic impact.
 
DRIVING COMFORT:
There will be height differences between the two lanes while milling and asphalt construction work are in progress.
Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians must exercise extreme caution, especially during wet conditions and when visibility is poor and at night. Vehicles with low-profile tyres and motorcyclists must take extra care.

Sunday, 26 June 2022: Eskom regrets to inform the public that Stage 4 loadshedding is anticipated to continue from 05:00 on Monday morning until midnight at least until Wednesday. This is due to unlawful and unprotected labour action at a number of power stations, which has caused delays in carrying out planned maintenance and repairs.

UPDATE: FLOODS IN GEORGE, REFUSE COLLECTION AND POWER OUTAGES

RAINFALL MEASURED
69mm of rain was received up to 8 am this morning in George, measured at the Old Water Works.

EMERGENCY SERVICES
All our department teams and emergency services are actively assessing and addressing flooding challenges as they are received. Please report all flooding and related incidents to 044 801 6300 or 044 801 9262.

UPDATE ON FLOODED STREETS
Hope Street and Industrial Road are open for traffic.

However, the following streets remain flooded. Motorists are advised to approach with caution.

• Victoria Street
• Merriman Street
• CJ Langenhoven Street
• Courtney Street (Courtney Street flooding left lane. Motorist’s to be careful travelling in the left lane opposite Kentucky and Dougies).
• Market Street
• St. Leger street
• Union Street (Closed)

REFUSE COLLECTION RESTARTS
Please take note that the refuse collection which was delayed earlier today due to the heavy rainfall will resume shortly as teams are moving out to collect to the following areas: Glenwood, Loerie Park, Eden, Genevafontein, Denverpark, Bergsig, and Eastern Extension.

LANDFILL SITE CLOSED TO PUBLIC
The Municipal Landfill site is still inaccessible due to flooding. Please note garden refuse and builders’ rubble cannot be dropped off, ONLY household refuse can be accepted until further notice.

POWER OUTAGE UPDATE
Power supply has been restored in portions of the Airport Road, Proefplaas and Herolds Bay, apart from two farms and the George Airport. Further repairs are underway.

NEW HOUSING OFFICE CLOSE TEMPORARILY
The New Housing offices, Corner of Varing and St. Johns Street have been closed for the remainder of the day due to flooding. Staff will work from home.

REPORTS OF FLOODING IN PARTS OF GEORGE ARE TRICKLING IN, RESIDENT ARE URGED TO BE CAUTIOUS

Following torrential rains since yesterday, several reports of flooding have been received this morning and our emergency teams are on standby and attending to the reported incidents.

Streets flooded include:
• Victoria Street
• Merriman Street
• Hope Street
• CJ Langehoven Street
• Courtney Street (Courtney Street flooding left lane. Motorist’s to be careful travelling in the left lane opposite Kentucky and Dougies).
• Market Street
• St Leger street

Traffic Department is going to close Union and Hope Street

SOME GO GEORGE ROUTES HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED DUE TO FLOODS
Several roads are flooded, and buses are suspended in several areas.

Accessibility all over town is being assessed.
Please note the following routes have been suspended with immediate effect due to flooding:
• R9 Industrial Loop
• R14 Pacaltsdorp Industrial
• R18 Parkdene – Blanco
