Household Composting Project – applications awaited

Household Composting Project

Issued by George Municipality 6 July 2022 for immediate release

 

Interested residents who meet the criteria are invited to apply to be added on the database, for the household composting project.

The George Municipality is inviting residents to join a project to turn household waste into compost.

Interested residents who meet the criteria can now apply for the database.

Approximately 30% of all household waste being disposed of at a landfill site consists of organic waste that could potentially be diverted from the landfill by means of household composting.

The George Municipality is initiating a household composting project in the George municipal area.

Permanent residents in the George Municipal area – specifically residing in George- are invited to apply for participation in the project.

It must be noted that the accommodated residents for the project, will be provided with a composting container/ bin.

Complex residents are also encouraged to apply.

Minimum criteria

  1. Must reside permanently in the George municipal area for the project (proof of address must be submitted).
  2. Must generate kitchen waste e.g., raw vegetable and fruit waste.

Application forms to participate in the project are available on the George Municipal website: www.george.gov.za or can be obtained from the George Environmental Services Municipal offices, 82 Meade Street, George.

George Municipality kindly requests the public to stagger the switching on of their appliances when Loadshedding is lifted to avoid overloading the network and creating a surge which causes our substations to trip thereby delaying restoration of power to all areas.

NMB BULK WATER PIPELINE UPGRADE

The upgrade of the bulk water pipeline servicing Thembalethu, Parkdene and Lawaaikamp from the c/o Vuyani Ncamazana Street and Nelson Mandela Boulevard will have an impact on road users for the period from 09 July 2022 to 30 September 2022.

DESCRIPTION:

The existing bulk and distribution water pipeline servicing Lawaaikamp, Parkdene and Thembalethu from the c/o Vuyani Ncamazana Street, Main Street and Nelson Mandela Blvd, as well as portions of Stanford Mangaliso Street, will be upgraded.

PROJECT PERIOD:

09 July 2022 to 30 September 2022

SERVICE DISRUPTION:

To minimize disruption to traffic, construction work crossing Nelson Mandela Boulevard will be limited to night-time working (between 18h00 and 06h00). Municipal services may be disrupted during construction. Advance notification of planned temporary water and traffic disruptions will be sent out via social media.   Valve chambers will be constructed in the adjacent road reserve in this period as well.

TRAFFIC IMPACT:

The street will be partially closed to traffic during the construction period. Construction is planned for night-time operation to minimize traffic congestion. Extra care needs to be taken by road users and pedestrians throughout the duration of the construction period. Adherence to temporary road signage and markings will be required.

ACCESS TO SITE:

Access to the site will be strictly controlled. Any member of the public who enters the site will have to comply with the relevant requirements in terms of the Health and Safety Act.

Parkdene water pipeline replacement: Water service disruption

 

The replacement of the asbestos water pipeline in Main Street, Parkdene from Nelson
Mandela Boulevard to Ballot Street has been completed and the old pipeline will be
decommissioned by connecting users to the new pipeline. This will have an
intermittent impact on water users for the period from 09 July 2022 to 27 July 2022.

DESCRIPTION:
The replacement of the asbestos water pipeline in Main Street, Parkdene from Nelson
Mandela Boulevard to Ballot Street has been completed and the old pipeline will be
decommissioned by connecting users to the new pipeline. This will have an impact on
water users between 09 July 2022 to 27 July 2022. (see yellow line).

PROJECT PERIOD:
09 July 2022 to 27 July 2022

SERVICE DISRUPTION:
The existing water connections will be transferred from the old to the new pipelines and
the main connection will be made between the old and new pipelines. Service disruptions
may occur between 08h00 and 16h00 daily along Main Road. Advance notification of
planned temporary disruptions will be sent out via letter drops to directly affected users
at specific time periods.

WATER DISRUPTION:
The connection will be undertaken between the time-periods indicated above.
ACCESS TO SITE:
Access to the site will be strictly controlled. Any member of the public who enters the site
will have to comply with the relevant requirements in terms of the Health and Safety Act.

NaTIS ON AND OFF: MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND DRIVING LICENCE TESTING CENTRE SERVICES SLOW

The George Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) situated in Hibernia Street (next to the train station) and the Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in Pacaltsdorp are experiencing a slow service from the electronic National Administration Traffic Information System (NaTIS) as it has been on and off since this morning.

This is a country-wide technical issue experienced by NaTIS users and it is being attended to.

Please be advised that the NATIS System and LEU (eye testing machines) are operational again at the Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in Pacaltsdorp. All licence renewals and eye testing services are going ahead.

PLEASE NOTE PEOPLE ARE CURRENTLY QUEUING FOR SERVICES.
