GEYSER SWITCH-OFF TIMES

GEYSER SWITCH-OFF TIMES

Issued by George Municipality 14 July 2022

The George Municipality switches off geysers according to the Eskom tariff structure peak times.

September to May (Low demand season)

Monday to Friday: 8am-10am and 6pm-8pm

Saturday: 10am-12pm and 6pm-8pm

Sunday: No switch-off

June to August (High demand season)

Monday to Friday: 7am-9am and 5pm-7pm

Saturday: 10am-12pm and 6pm-8pm

Sunday: No switch-off

As per government legislation all municipalities have been required to install geyser control systems to help flatten the peaks on the national load curve and this has been in place nationwide for about a decade. The geyser control system is intentionally set to switch geysers off during peak times as without it there would be more load shedding.

While most municipalities switch geysers off for three hours during the entire morning peak time, George switches off for two hours – an hour each in morning and evening peak times.

Due to the current load shedding and the excessive load that is encountered during certain times after the power returns, the automatic geyser system takes control and keeps the geysers off until the load reaches satisfactory levels.  This normally takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Resurfacing of CJ Langenhoven Road (Davidson Road to York Street), funded by Western Cape Government:
Transport and Public Works

PLANNED CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES ON CJ LANGENHOVEN ROAD:
The works comprise the resurfacing of CJ Langenhoven Road, George. The section in question is between the
George Hospital in the west and York Street in the east.
Also included is the repair of sections of stormwater and kerbs.
The length of the above road section is approximately 1030 meters.
There is one lane in each direction along this section of the road, with numerous accesses to commercial
properties. The width of the road is approximately 11.4 meters.

PROJECT PERIOD:
July to September 2022.

SERVICE DISRUPTION:
Traffic congestion can be expected.

TRAFFIC IMPACT:
The remedial work will require the milling and removal of existing bituminous layers as well as milling and removal
of existing gravel base layers. The milling operations will be followed by the placing of new bituminous base layers
and surface layers.
The above work will be carried out in half widths and the Langenhoven Street will be restricted to one-way traffic
at times. Traffic will be managed by means of stop and go or rerouted. This will lead to traffic congestion and
delays.
Access to businesses will be maintained, however parking between Palm Road and York Street will be impacted
Reconstruction and repairs to kerbs will have no major traffic impact.

DRIVING COMFORT:
There will be a height difference between the two lanes while milling and asphalt construction work is in progress.
Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians must exercise extreme caution, especially during wet conditions, when visibility
is poor and at night. Vehicles with low profile tyres and motorcyclists must take extra care.

PROJECT ENQUIRIES: iX Engineers – 076 393 1177

Public Notice: Streetlight Relay Switching affected by Loadshedding

Public Notice: Streetlight Relay Switching affected by Loadshedding

Re-issued George Mun, 11 July 2022

Challenges due to loadshedding
Members of the public have noted that after Loadshedding some streetlights remain on in George. Our streetlights are switched on and off via a Relay Automated System which is located in our central control room. This equipment has started taking strain with the persistent on and off of Loadshedding and the Electrotechnical Department is putting in additional processes to try and ensure that streetlights are switched off. It must also be noted that during Loadshedding we have experienced repeated theft of cable which affects the signalling at the Control Centre. Around 2000 of our streetlights have also been fitted with LED which use less energy, require less maintenance and have a longer lifespan compared to incandescent and other light types.

We appreciate the public taking the time to phone in to our division should they note that streetlights remain ON between hours 09h00 and 17h00, and remain OFF between hours 19h00 and 06h00.

Repairs on streetlights
Please note that in order to affect repairs on streetlights they need to be switched on so our teams can see which ones are not burning and it can happen sometimes that the automatic switchover function (that switches the lights off in the day) is not reactivated when the work is finished.

One electrical box usually serves a few streets, so while you may not see people working, they may just be where you cannot see them. However, teams would seldom work for more than a day in an area, except when a project is being rolled out or several lights are being installed or fixed. In general, if streetlights are burning during the day for more than a one-day cycle, please report it during office hours to 044 801 9222 or 044 874 3917 so that the department can go investigate.

Please phone in to report streetlights on during the day to 044 801 9222 or 044 801 9202 or on our WhatsApp Number 067 350 3295 (Available Monday to Friday 07h45 – 16h30)
