UPDATE WEATHER CONDITIONS: Strong wind resulted in  fire and power outages

Veld Fires
Strong winds have kept municipal departments busy today, 21 June with veld fires attended to  and put out in Victoria Bay, Hoekwil, Thembalethu and the  York Street Cemetery.  Currently the landfill site fire which started last night has been extinguished but continues to smoulder. A bulldozer is being used to smother burning material. A second veld fire in Hoekwil was reported around 2pm today and a fire on the R102 was being attended to. George Fire Services are being assisted by Garden  Route District Municipal Fire Services.

Fallen Trees
Two incidents have been attended to where trees had fallen onto informal  structures in Thabata and Yawani Street. Emergency services responded to assist. No injuries have been reported.

Power Outages
Strong winds have caused several high voltage power outages with Herold’s Bay, Oubaai, the Airport Line and sections of Pacaltsdorp off earlier today. Hansmoeskraal will be switched on shortly. The Hoekwil outage repair is being hampered by the veld fire still burning. Electricians will only be able to start repair work when they can access the lines.

Wilderness Heights – Watsonia Lane , Taaibos Street and De Waal Drive remain off, an electrician is busy with the lines and power should be restored shortly.

Saasveld, Fairy Knowe and Geelhoutboom are currently experiencing power outages, with electricians patrolling the lines to find faults.

Thembalethu Ramaphosa West line has had to be switched off for emergency repairs due to illegal connections and this has affected  Zone  6 and 7.
Thembalethu Zone 4,  is experiencing a low voltage problem which has been given through to the team for repair.

WARNINGS REMAIN IN PLACE UNTIL THIS EVENING:
FIRE CONDITIONS Strong and hot northerly winds conducive to runaway veld fires are expected to continue on the Garden Route until Monday evening 21 June 2021. Please do not make open fires and discard or cigarette butts responsibly. Report fires in George to 044 801 6311.

STRONG WINDS  to continue on the Garden Route until  Monday night 21 June 2021. Please be mindful of possible associated hazards including trees falling over, breaking branches, debris blowing around and crosswinds on roads and between buildings. PUBLIC NOTICE: Take note – Transformer Testing could lead to trips

The Electrotechnical Services department will be undertaking extensive testing on their power transformer fleet throughout George, up to and including the 25 June 2021. This involves isolating one of the two transformers at each substation, performing  the necessary tests and then re-energising the substation.

Each substation has two transformers, and while testing is in progress on a transformer, it will mean that the substations will only be running on one transformer, and our usual “backup”  or failsafe system will therefore be non-existent.

Electrotechnical Services is able to manage the loading while only running a substation on one transformer,  but there is always the possibility of an unexpected failure or fault which will lead to loss of power on that substation. Re-energising the alternative transformer will be possible, however, this will take some time depending on the progress of the testing procedure.

This notice serves as information only, and whilst the utmost care will be taken to ensure a firm power supply remains in place, faults may occur, and this could lead to prolonged outages. Please keep an eye on our social media channels and/or App for updates relevant to your area.
