Alien Invasive Plant Awareness Campaign

Municipal Plant of the Month – Plant: False agave or Mauritian Hemp : (Furcraea foetida)
Description: An evergreen perennial subshrub that is stemless or with a short stem up to 1m high. It has been widely cultivated as a succulent garden ornamental. The leaves are sword-shaped, 1-1.8m long and 10-15cm broad at their widest point, narrowing to 6-7cm broad at the leaf base, and to a sharp spine tip at the apex. The flowers are greenish to creamy white, 4 cm long and strongly scented. They are produced on a large inflorescence up to 12m tall.

Invasive status: Listed as a NEMBA Category 1a invasive weed and known to invade coastal sites, cliffs, gullies, hillsides, and open woodlands where it crowds out indigenous species.

Spread: It produces a massive, upright, much-branched flower cluster, which is 2-12m tall. What might appear to be fruit is large plantlets (i.e., bulbils), 1-16cm long, formed by the thousands. Gravity is the main natural means of dispersal, and dense thickets often form around individual plants. These plantlets may also be spread over larger distances by animals, in soil or in dumped garden waste.

Control: Plants must be cut down and the stumps treated with a suitable herbicide such as Amazapyr. Uproot young plants, especially in hedgerows. Regular follow-up is essential.

Streetlights burning during the day? Switching streetlights on and off

Streetlights are switched on and off via a Relay Automated System which is located in our central control room. This equipment

has started taking strain with the persistent on and off of load shedding and the Electrotechnical Department is.

putting in additional processes to try and ensure that streetlights are switched off. It must also be noted that during

Loadshedding, we have experienced repeated cable theft which affects the signalling at the Control Centre.

Around 3000 of our streetlights have to date been fitted with LED which use less energy, require less maintenance and has a longer lifespan compared to light types.

We appreciate the public taking the time to phone the Directorate should they note that streetlights remain ON between hours 09h00 and 17h00 and remain OFF between hours 19h00 and 06h00.

Repairs on streetlights

Please note that in order to affect repairs on streetlights they need to be switched on so that teams can see which ones are not burning.

One electrical box usually serves a few streets, so while you may not see people working, they may just be where you cannot see them. However, teams would seldom work for more than a day in an area,
except when a project is being rolled out or several lights are being installed or fixed. In general, if streetlights are burning during the day for

more than a one-day cycle, please report it during office hours to 044 801 9222 or 044 874 3917 so that the Directorate can go and  investigate.

Please phone in to report streetlights ON during the day 044 801 9222 or 044 801 9202 or on our WhatsApp Number 067 350 3295 (Available Monday to Friday 07h45 – 16h30)

Streetlights are fixed within 10 working days. If the broken lights in your street are not fixed within 10 working days from when you reported it, please follow up with us per telephone during office hours.

Please note Facebook is not an official municipal complaints channel. To generate a reference number, your complaint must be reported telephonically to customer care  or on the George Municipality mobile App or via email at gmun@george.gov.za

PUBLIC NOTICE: Easing of Water Restrictions from Level 2C to 2B

Special Council held on Friday 12 April 2024 resolved that, as of May 1, 2024, water restrictions in George will be eased from Level 2C to Level 2B. This means that emergency tariffs will no longer apply, and standard water tariffs will be charged.

Background
Stricter water restrictions were implemented in December 2022 due to the existing Water Treatment Works’ inability to meet the demand for drinking water. To address this, a temporary water purification package plant capable of treating 5Ml/day was installed. This plant served as a supplement during periodic shutdowns of the existing Water Treatment Works for maintenance, upgrades, and the ongoing construction of the new 20Ml Water Treatment Works plant.

Upgrades in Progress
The George Municipality received a Budget Facility for Infrastructure Funding (BFI) grant of R1.107 billion from the National Treasury in the 2021/22 financial year. The project, consisting of 12 different components, is expected to be completed within the next two years. The BFI project allows for the extension of George’s water treatment capacity over two phases spanning three years (2022 – 2025). Phase 2 entails an additional 20 Mℓ/day extension to the New George Water Treatment Works (WTW), and Phase 3 involves constructing an additional 30 Mℓ balancing dam at the New George Water Treatment Works (WTW).

The water restrictions imposed in December 2022 have been maintained up till now to manage the water demand, especially during frequent WTW shutdowns required for BFI construction. The package plant will continue operating until the completion, commissioning, and operation of the new 20Ml/day plant. The progress of the 20Ml/day extension will be reassessed again later this year, together with the possible impact of the seasonal peak for 2024/25 and the ongoing population growth in George taken into account. If necessary, stricter water restrictions will have to again be reintroduced.

Monitoring Raw Water Resources
Raw water resources, affected by increased demand and drier than usual conditions will continue to be closely monitored. Despite the Garden Route Dam being refilled to 100% capacity due to unusually heavy rainfall last week on April 9, this does not influence the decision to ease existing restrictions. Water remains a scarce resource that must be protected and preserved at all costs.

Level 2B Water Restrictions effective from May 1, 2024, in the George city area, and not in Uniondale and Haarlem:

1. The mechanical irrigation of gardens with municipal potable water is prohibited.
2. Gardens may be watered at any time using a handheld bucket.
3. Gardens may be watered using a handheld garden hose only within specified time frames.

  • From September 1 to April 30: 18:00 to 20:00
  • From May 1 to August 31: 17:00 to 19:00
  • For retirement villages and facilities: 16:00 to 18:00 throughout the year
  • Even numbered households: Mondays and Thursdays
  • Uneven numbered households: Tuesdays and Fridays4. The irrigation or watering of all sport fields is prohibited, except for specific instances.
    5. The washing of vehicles with a garden hose, except by commercial enterprises, is prohibited.
    6. The cleaning of ANY area by means of water is prohibited.
    7. The filling of swimming pools is prohibited, with exceptions subject to approved exemption applications.
    8. Where own water from a borehole or reservoir is used, appropriate notices shall be displayed.
    9. Applications for exemptions are to be submitted for approval.

Accident in Kaaimans Pass – Road partially closed

Issued by George Municipality, 14 April 2024, 16:27

A truck has overturned in Kaaimans Pass, Wilderness. Officials have closed one double lane, direction George to Wilderness. The second lane en route to George has been converted to a two-way traffic lane, vehicles traveling to and from George are not affected.

Traffic officials have been deployed to regulate the traffic flow. Further details will follow once we receive further updates.

ESKOM LOADSHEDDING UPDATE: 14 April 2024

After 18 consecutive days of no loadshedding, it will remain suspended until further notice. This positive development is attributed to the sustained availability of generation capacity and emergency reserves.

A total of 2 150MW of generation capacity is planned to be restored by Monday. Eskom will provide an update on Wednesday afternoon or promptly communicate any significant changes should they occur.

Tonight’s evening peak demand is 25 886MW. Unplanned outages were reduced to 12 850MW, while planned maintenance is currently at 7 368MW. (Eskom)
