Libraries
There are eleven libraries in the George municipal area. Services include the lending out of books, magazines, music and DVDs
as well as photocopying and computer services and, in some cases internet access.
If you are a resident in the George municipal area, you can borrow books and other materials, and use facilities free of charge.
If you are not local, the service is available at R139 per year.
Library visitors only pay R60 per person, as a deposit, after library use and all used material in good order you receive back the R60.
Adults can borrow four books, two magazines and two CDs for a period of two weeks at a time.
Children can borrow three books, one magazine for a period of two weeks at a time.
Adults can borrow one DVD per family overnight.
If you want to extend your borrowing time, you can do so over the phone or renew at the library.
LIBBY APP
The Libby app is a user-friendly platform that allows you to borrow and read eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines from your local library on your smartphone, tablet, or e-reader, offering a convenient and seamless digital library experience.

Use the library portal link to search online according to author, title, subjects, keyword, publisher or ISBN number. Simply type in your library card number to check your library
OTHER SERVICES
Computers: at least one computer per library for typing of long documents, free of charge. Larger libraries may have more computers.
Internet: Free access to the Internet is available at some libraries.
Photocopying: self-service photocopying at 50c per page (bring loose coins)
Printing: R2 per black and white A4-page, R5 per colour A4-page
Chess: The main library and Thembalethu library each have four chess tables and chess mentorship by staff.
Children’s programmes: Story hour in the afternoon, reading cycle for pre-schools, read-aloud for primary children, holiday programmes, library tours and orientation. Watch the notice boards for information.
Some libraries conduct outreach to schools, institutions and organisations. Please inquire at your community library on numbers below.
BECOME A LIBRARY MEMBER
Bring a copy of your ID document and proof of your residential address to your local library and fill in the relevant form at the counter.
It takes about three working days for the application to be processed and a library card issued.
