The George Municipality recently held a Gala dinner as a gesture of appreciation and to bid farewell to the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Peer Educators, who served in different subsections of the Municipal Community Development Division to gain experiential training for 12 months.

The Gala dinner took place at the Banquet Hall in the Civic Centre, on 29 June 2023, and was attended by the Speaker of the George Municipal Council, councillor Sean Snyman, councillors, and officials of the George Municipality among other guests. EPWP is a key government initiative, which contributes to Government Policy Priorities in terms of decent work & sustainable livelihoods, education, health; rural development; food security & land reform and the fight against crime & corruption.

These Peer educators have been trained as Early Childhood Development practitioners, Adherence Counsellors and Facilitators and have undertaken a 12-month exposure into the working environment in the George Municipality from July 2022 to June 2023. Sophia Fanelo, the George Municipality’s Manager for Social Development says that the Forty (40) EPWP peer educators who were appointed through the EPWP fund are now ready for the corporate working environment. “The training these peer educators had undergone in the Municipal Community Development was intended at empowerment and learning working skills.”

After 12 months of experiential training at the George Municipality, five of the peer educators have already secured appointments at Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Government Departments. “We are thrilled and proud to announce that five peer educators have subsequently been permanently employed, two (2) by the Department of Education, one at Kekkel & Kraai, one at Bell and another one at the Department of Health,” Fanelo added. “Some of the Peers also got their Learners Licence through the Public Work programme.”

Councillors: From left to right: Sophia Fanelo (Manager: Social Development), Councillor Brendon Adams (Portfolio Councillor: Social Development, Libraries and Sport), Councillor Jacqulique Von Brandis (Portfolio Councillor: Civil Engineering Services: Capital Projects & BFI), and Councillor Sean Snyman (Speaker).

N2 night-time road closure at Thembalethu Bridge in George extended for one week

TRAFFIC ADVISORY Issued on behalf of SANRAL

Western Cape, 11 August 2023 – The South African National Roads Agency (SOC) Limited (SANRAL) would like to inform road users travelling on the N2 George, that the night-time road closure on the N2 at the Thembalethu Bridge, is extended until 18 August 2023, for westbound traffic (direction Cape Town) only.

“These closures are required to remove form work and steel beams used during the casting of the new bridge across the N2,” said Petronella Theron, SANRAL Project Manager.

During the lane closures, motorists will be able to use the off-ramps at the bridge to gain access to the N2 on the other side, in order to continue their journey. Closures are expected to be in place from 19:00 to 05:00.

Furthermore, one lane (the left lane) will remain closed during the entire day for the period 17 to 18 August 2023. This daytime closure is required with respect to the maximum height restriction that has been imposed on vehicles.

“We appeal to road users to reduce speed in the construction area and to be vigilant. We have opted to execute these works that necessitate a lane closure, under night-time conditions, so as to minimise the inconvenience to road users,” said Theron.

GEORGE MUNICIPALITY SERVICES ON HIGH ALERT AS HEAVY RAIN AND DAMAGING WAVES ARE PREDICTED

The George Municipality has prepared a contingency plan consisting of integrated multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary services within the George Municipality to respond and implement measures aimed at disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response, to the predicted disruptive rain and damaging waves from Friday into Sunday this weekend.

Rainfall accumulations are expected to be 20 – 40mm within the yellow warning area while reaching up to 50 – 70mm in the orange warning area,” says the SA Weather Service warning.

“Level 4 and 5 winds and waves from Friday, 28 July 2023 at 18:00 until Sunday, 30 July 3023 at 14:00. Significant wave heights between Alexander Bay and Cape Point on Friday into Saturday. Along with south-westerly to southerly winds of 40 – 60km/h, gusting 70km/h. PUBLIC NOTICE: Alien Invasive Plant Awareness Campaign

Municipal Plant of the Month – the White Ginger Lily. Hedychium sp H.coccineum, H.gardenerianum, H.coronarium, H.flavescens.

Identification: These plants have similar growth habits to Cannas. And are large and robust – growing up to 2 m tall. They have large broad bright green leaves that sheath the stems. The flowers range in colour from white, yellow to red and orange-yellow. Flowers are very showy and have a lovely fragrance. Flower spikes appear between January and March – they are up to 350 mm long and every individual flower has a slender tube, three narrow and three broad petal-like lobes. Hedychium sp sprouts very readily from strong rhizomes, forms dense clumps and easily re-grow from any broken sections left behind in the soil.

Invasive Status: Ginger lilies are listed as Category 1b weeds and habitat transformers and must be removed and destroyed. They invade forests, plantations and riverbanks as well as moist shaded sites.

Control: Ginger lilies are difficult to control once established. As there is no herbicide registered for the control of this plant, although Kaput has been found to be effective in some instances, entire plants and rhizomes should be manually removed. Follow-up may well be necessary to remove plants that have re-grown from pieces of rhizome left behind. Do not dump this species on a compost heap – it will take root and establish itself right there. Preferably shred before disposal/composting. However, if that is not possible, remove the rhizomes, allow them to dry out and then burn.
