Municipal Woman’s Month Campaign – My Inspirational Woman

The month of August is dedicated to celebrating women all over the world and at the George Municipality we would like to celebrate the phenomenal women who are an inspiration to their colleagues.

This week we celebrate Ms. Ishenique Felix, nominated by Megan Hopewell, Prosecutor at the George Municipality.

I’d like to nominate Ms. Ishenique Felix, Legal Advisor and Prosecutor employed under the Legal and Compliance Department.

I met Ms. Felix 3 months ago when I started my position as prosecutor at the Municipal Court. She welcomed me with open arms, and we instantly became not only good colleagues, but also good friends. She was very patient while teaching me the in’s and out’s of my new position and took time out of her busy schedule to assist me however she could.

Ishenique is a resilient yet soft woman with a strong faith and resolute morals and values. Despite always being a paragon of professionalism, she is compassionate; always approachable, kind, and helpful. She is dependable, trustworthy, and hardworking, always doing more for the institution than what is expected of her. Her presence in my work- and personal life brings me great comfort and I am blessed and privileged to have her as both a colleague and friend.

– Megan Hopewell, Prosecutor at the George Municipality.

To commemorate our own inspirational women within the municipality, we invite all officials from all departments to nominate a female colleague who is inspirational to you – tell us what makes this person so special.
Please send us a description of what this person means to you (100 -150 words maximum and a recent photograph).

You can send your nomination anonymously or proudly state who you are and why you have chosen your nominee. The ‘My Inspirational Woman’ and her story will then be shared with all officials!

Please email your story to npayle@george.gov.za
Deadline for the next Nominee: Nominate your Inspirational Female Colleague for next week by Wednesday 16 August.

There is something so special about a woman who dominates in a man’s world. It takes a certain grace, strength, intelligence, fearlessness and the nerve to never take no as an answer- Rihanna

Consumers are reminded to use electricity sparingly after power returns, especially after a 4-hour Loadshedding slot
Please do not switch high-usage equipment on immediately after Load shedding. Consumers are urged to turn off high-usage equipment and where possible to not switch on appliances such as stoves and kettles for at least 30 minutes after load shedding. This will reduce the risk of overload tripping on the network and reduce our current high MVA spikes.

Reporting power outages
Please do not phone the after-hours number or the Electrotechnical Department to report that you have no power immediately after load shedding is scheduled to be lifted. Please be aware of the rotational switching on and wait at least 30 minutes before reporting no power. The directorate will be aware of a possible substation trip that needs to be sorted out.

PUBLIC NOTICE: GEORGE MUNICIPALITY CALLS ON CITIZENS TO BE VIGILANT OF CYBERCRIME

With the increase in the usage of online payments, so is the growth of cybercrime, and the George Municipality calls on the citizens, ratepayers, and Municipal clients to be vigilant and not become tricked by cybercriminals.

Spoofing (involves faking one’s identity and can be used for various attacks such as identity theft) and phishing (one such use of spoofing that attempts to steal somebody’s personal information or credentials by having them volunteer that information from a nefarious source that looks legit) attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and we must be proactive in protecting the Municipality, citizens and businesses against these malicious attacks and scams.

The public is urged to carefully check the municipality’s banking detail. It is your responsibility as the payer (ratepayer, citizen, business, client of the Municipality etc.) to ensure that the correct banking details are captured when making payments to George Municipality.

We would like to remind the public of George Municipality’s banking details with FNB.

2. Create a new George Municipality beneficiary:
a) search for George Municipality as the Institution name and click select,
b) continue filling in the required information until the transaction is complete.

Should you require any assistance in updating George Municipality as a beneficiary, please feel free to contact our Finance offices on 044 801 9111.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING DOS AND DON’TS THAT MAY BE HELPFUL TO PREVENT CYBERCRIME.

DO:
• Pay attention to the salutation in the email. It should mention your full name.
• Open your browser and type the link to the site on the address bar yourself.
• If spoofing is suspected, log in by typing any characters. Some new spoof versions display ‘login failed’ in any case, so it doesn’t raise suspicion. Thus, your login failure is not an indication that the website is authentic. Watch for further clues.
• Know that financial institutions are very aware of spoofing and will not contact you by email if there are account problems.
• Know that no bank will ask you to enter your credit/debit, card PIN number, or driver’s licence number online for authentication purposes. Most will not ask for SSN, although some insurance companies do that. This is a bad practice, even if the connection is secure.
• Examine the URL on the address bar. If it contains a number followed by the website’s name, it is a spoof. A hijacked URL is shifted and blurry. Examine cookies and the status bar.

DON’T:

• Believe an email if it greets you by your e-mail address or “Dear customer”.
• Click on a link to a site in an email or from a chatroom.
• Try to log in immediately. Look for suspicious giveaways. Even if a ‘login failed’ message asks you to try again, do not enter your real login name and password, but watch for more clues.
• Panic if you receive an e-mail about account problems.
• Enter your PIN number. No bank will request such information online or by phone.
• Continue if the address bar doesn’t clearly show the real address. If in doubt, close the browser, then reopen and retype.

Ends.

Treasure that Smart Card – it’s your key to travelling on the bus

When GO GEORGE introduced the Smart Card system in 2018, the concept of tapping or scanning a card to board a bus was new to most of the passengers using the bus service.

Today, it is second nature, with just under 120 000 cards sold to date.
However, this figure is far more than the number of passengers using the bus service, and can be partly attributed to cards getting damaged and being replaced.

Sensitive technology
A smart card is essentially a plastic card with various technology embedded that allow the card to be “tapped” and read when presented to the different devices (top-up vendor device, kiosk device and on-bus card reader). When the card is in working order, this allows the passenger to see how many trips are left on the card and subtracts one trip from the balance when scanned on the bus.
When the card gets damaged, the different devices will not be able to read the card and it won’t scan at all. This is frustrating and necessitates a visit to one of the GO GEORGE Smart Card Kiosks where a diagnostic test is done to determine the issue.

Prevent damage to card
There are simple ways to minimise the risk of damage to a smart card. This will not only prevent passengers from being inconvenienced when boarding a bus at the last minute, just to find out their card is not working, but will also cut out the unnecessary cost of buying a new card.
• Keep the card – along with all other cards – protected in a wallet or cardholder to avoid possible damage from other pocket or purse items.
• Always keep the card straight and never bend it.
• Coming into contact with refrigerator magnets, clasps on wallets, and magnets on the back of tape measures and flashlights can demagnetize a card.
• When you place your card in your wallet, be sure not to rub it up against the metal clasp and place it as far away from it as possible.
• Protect the card from direct heat, open flames, etc.
• Make sure that it doesn’t land in the laundry with your clothes.
• Keep in mind that it is made of plastic – anything that damages plastic, can damage the card.
• In essence, the GO GEORGE Smart Card should be treated like a bank card.

Check expiry date
Like any other smart card and bank card, the GO GEORGE Smart Card is valid for five years. After that, you will need to buy a new card, or use another valid card in your possession which will save you money. Keep an eye on your card’s expiry date and make sure you don’t get caught unawares.
The expiry date is printed on the front of the card for ease of reference. Use an alternative card if you have one, or buy your new card at R35 from any GO GEORGE Smart Card kiosk. Remaining trips on the expiring card will be transferred to the new card, or whichever existing card you choose to use.

Ná vyf jaar moet jy ‘n nuwe GO GEORGE-slimkaart koop, of ‘n ander geldige kaart in jou besit gebruik wat jou geld sal spaar. Hou jou kaart se vervaldatum dop en maak seker jy word nie onverhoeds betrap nie.
Die vervaldatum is voorop die kaart gedruk. Gebruik ‘n alternatiewe kaart as jy een het, of koop jou nuwe kaart teen R35 by enige GO GEORGE-slimkaartkiosk.

GEORGE MUNICIPALITY INSTALLS GENERATORS TO PROTECT ITS INFRASTRUCTURE AGAINST LOADSHEDDING

Photo 1: From left: Jannie Koegelenberg (Director of Civil Engineering Services), Councillor Jacqulique Von Brandis (Portfolio Councillor: Civil Engineering Services: Capital Projects & BFI), Councillor Browen Johnson (Portfolio Councillor Civil Engineering Services: Operating Aspects), and Alderman Leon van Wyk (Executive Mayor of George).

While Eskom’s loadshedding continues in South Africa, the George Municipality intensifies its efforts to protect Municipal facilities through the installation of generators at the various pump stations to protect its infrastructure and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of services to the citizens, because of loadshedding.

According to the George Municipality’s Civil Engineering Service Department, generators have been installed at 13 municipal facilities. The Executive Mayor, Alderman Leon van Wyk recently visited the Garden Route Dam to witness the two largest generators that the Municipality has installed to date. Mayor van Wyk was accompanied by the Portfolio Councillor for Civil Engineering Services Capital Projects & BFI Jacqulique Von Brandis, Portfolio Councillor for Civil Engineering Services Operating Aspects Browen Johnson and the director for Civil Engineering Services in the George Municipality Jannie Koegelenberg.

“We are grateful for these two generators, thanks to the Bulk Facility for Infrastructure grant awarded by National Treasury to George Municipality in 2021,” said Mayor van Wyk. “There are two 1250 kVA generators, and we need these two generators to power our pump stations to pump raw water from the dam to our water treatment works when loadshedding or any other power outage occurs. Together these two generators use 500 litres of fuel an hour, being two of a number of generators providing backup energy for essential services.”

Deon de Jager, the Deputy Director for Water and Sanitation in the Civil Engineering Directorate confirmed that the Municipality has secured the services for the installation of generators for a three-year period. “The municipality currently has a three-year tender in place for the supply and installation of standby generators for municipal facilities such as sewer and water pump stations,” he said.

Backup emergency generators were installed at the following sewer pump stations in the last year, funded by the Municipality:
• Central Pumpstation (Wilderness) = 30kva generator
• Fancourt PS = 30kva generator
• Herolds Bay PS = 150kva
• Proefplaas PS (George) = 300kva
• Rooi Rivier (George) = 200kva
• Tamsui PS (George) = 50kva
• Thembalethu PS No.1 = 200kva
• Thembalethu PS No.2 = 60kva
• Touwsranten PS E (Wilderness) = 20kva
• Touwsranten PS A (Wilderness) = 100kva
• Touwsranten PS D (Wilderness) = 60kva
• Serpentine (Wilderness) = 100kva
• Ebb n Flow Sewer Pump Station = 300kva

“An emergency backup generator project is funded through the Emergency Load Shedding Relief Grant, and the scope of works is essentially the provision of backup power to water and sewer treatment facilities to ensure uninterrupted operation during load shedding, therefore, avoiding sewage spills and subsequently preventing pollution to the environment, as well as securing potable water supply. The total project cost is R11 million and will provide four new sewer/water generators benefiting the entire George Municipal Area,” de Jager added.

PHASE 1 OF THE MEUL SEWAGE UPGRADE PUMP STATION COMPLETED

Photo 1: Councillor Jacqulique Von Brandis (Portfolio Councillor: Civil Engineering Services: Capital Projects & BFI), Councillor Browen Johnson (Portfolio Councillor Civil Engineering Services: Operating Aspects), Alderman Leon van Wyk (Executive Mayor of George), and Jannie Koegelenberg (Director of Civil Engineering Services)

The George Municipality is proud to announce that the phase 1 upgrade of the Meul Sewage Pump Station, which is valued at approximately R31.67 million, has been completed. In recent years, this pump station, which is one of George’s most critical pump stations experienced frequent and costly breakdowns that threatened the integrity of the sewage system it serves, as well as the surrounding environment.

The Executive Mayor of George Alderman Leon van Wyk flanked by Portfolio Councillor for Civil Engineering Services Capital Projects & BFI Jacqulique Von Brandis and Portfolio Councillor for Civil Engineering Services Operating Aspects Browen Johnson recently visited the newly refurbished pump station, which is situated in Parkdene, to see the work that has been done.

“We would like to commend the Civil Engineering Services for the upgrades we’ve seen here as well as the repairs to the pump station that include the refurbishment of the internal of the pump station. We’ve also seen a new Motor Control Centre (MCC) room, a generator room, and a permanent backup generator, as well as a new valve chamber to the rising main and sump modifications,” said Mayor van Wyk. “Thanks to the National Treasury’s Budget Facility Infrastructure (BFI) award to George last year which makes this upgrade a reality.”

Photo 2: Councillor Browen Johnson (Portfolio Councillor Civil Engineering Services: Operating Aspects), Alderman Leon van Wyk (Executive Mayor of George), Councillor Jacqulique Von Brandis (Portfolio Councillor: Civil Engineering Services: Capital Projects & BFI) and Jannie Koegelenberg (Director of Civil Engineering Services)

According to the George Municipality’s Civil Engineering Services (CES) Director, Jannie Koegelenberg the Meul pump station provides more energy-efficient pumps with higher capacity that meet future flow needs, as well as provide additional reliability by adding an emergency power generator to keep the installation operational during load shedding, amongst other critical upgrades. This upgrade comprises three main components which are civil engineering construction, mechanical refurbishment and upgrading, and a new electrical and control installation.

“The mechanical component includes new pumps, pipework, valves, screens, and equipment, while the electrical upgrade comprises electronic and instrumentation refurbishment and new bulk electrical works, a new motor control centre, a permanent standby generator, instrumentation, and related cables,” Koegelenberg added.

Phase 2 of the upgrade will follow shortly and will include mechanical equipment at the inlet works to remove screenings and grit automatically, and the replacement of a portion of the rising main. Site access and security will also be improved as part of the upgrade.

Swart River Dam: Rehabilitation of Access Road has commenced

The access road to the Swart River Dam was severely damaged during the 2021 floods. The dam is, located North-East of the city and was constructed in 1940 and  raised in 1954.

George Municipality has a legislative responsibility to maintain the dam and received grant funding to undertake repairs along this route following the flood damage.

This road is also extensively used by outdoor enthusiasts, but unfortunately construction activities will make this area  dangerous during the construction period, and members of the public are requested to avoid the area until the necessary repairs to this phase have been completed. The expected time of completion will be five months subject to no delays.

The repair to the road will make it safer for all, and the municipality requests the public’s patience in this regard. Please allow the construction works to proceed unimpeded. The Municipality has undertaken to regularly update the community on the  progress with the construction work.

Please note this work does not impact the current access to Garden Route Dam, as the Swart River Dam is located a few kilometres upstream of the Garden Route Dam.

Vehicular access to the Swart River Dam is from Eleventh Avenue, Denneoord, through the emergency airstrip. Note this is ONLY for  municipal vehicles and other authorised users.

This first phase of the project to reinstate the access to the Swart River Dam will allow the Municipality to do maintenance work at the dam as well.  The wash away approximately 1.7km North of the horse-shoe bend will be reinstated together with a 100 metre section of the access track on the city side.

Gabions (wire baskets filled with tightly packed stone) will be used to stabilise the slope and a small bridge will be constructed at the wash-away to ease access and prevent future damage.  The second phase will follow next year where the next section beyond the first wash-away will be stabilised with gabions.  Once the access road has been fully reinstated, the Municipality will be able to address certain minor works at the dam in order to meet statutory dam safety requirements.

Public Safety Notice

The access road to the Swart River Dam area is now a construction site and possession has been handed over to the Contractor. The Contractor’s  Health and Safety Plan takes effect in this area that prohibits ALL PUBLIC ACCESS  (hikers, runners, cyclists, bird watchers, etc) due to safety measures.  Heavy construction vehicles will be using the narrow access roads to the construction site. The municipal vehicular access from the Denneoord landing strip remains a no-go area.

Health and Safety Signage

Signboards will be erected at the main access point to the Swart River Dam site, and all signage, flag persons and Health and Safety officials are to be obeyed at all times.  The Municipality  thanks the public for their support and patience while this important remedial work takes place to the safety benefit of all.
