Printed photographs once again required for driving licenses

The George Municipality has just been informed of a decision by the National Department of Transport that, with immediate effect, printed ID photographs will again be required for applications and renewals of driving licences and professional driving permits.

George Traffic Chief Donovan Saptoe said it had become standard practice in many Driving Licence Testing Centres to use a digital camera facility linked to the drivers licencing computer software, instead of the printed ID photographs. “Following a Forms Working Group held on National Government level last month, centres were informed via the Inspectorate for Driving License Testing Centres that Regulations of the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996, required provision for a photograph – and that applicants should be informed to bring four colour photographs when applying for (and renewing) a driving licence and two photographs when applying for a professional driving permit. Two photographs are required for a learner’s driving license.

"Photographs can be colour or black and white, must be head and shoulders, without glasses or head covering (other than for legitimate religious reasons).

“The George Municipality understands the inconvenience and recognises that it is an additional expense it would have preferred to have spared our citizens, but compliance to the law as it stands is important, and the municipality has to comply. The municipality would also appreciate if citizens can assist in spreading the word.”
