George represented on Western Cape’s Women’s Commission
Councillor Elizabeth (Liza) Stroebel, PR Councillor for George has been appointed as the official representative for George on the South African Local Government Association’s (SALGA) Western Cape Women’s Commission. SALGA is the constitutionally mandated organisation responsible for local government oversight. The Women’s commission was established in 2008 to co-ordinate, promote and advocate for gender appropriate strategies within local municipalities and to feed into the national, regional and global agenda’s.
The strategic objective of the Women’s commission is to increase the representation and participation of women in local government. In the Western Cape over 1.6 million votes are women and 1.3 million men. With the goal of obtaining the 50/50 principle by 2019, the current status in the Western Cape is 48% female PR Councillors, 33% female Ward Councillors and 41% females in positions such as Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip.
Woman from all levels of society are under-represented in positions of political authority and socio-economic decision-making with the major challenges identified are those of limited progress towards gender equality; a lack of female leaders and continued social stereotyping.
Cllr Stroebel’s role as the George representative is to ensure that these global challenges are addressed at local government level in terms of community development, safety and security, employment equity legislation as well as within the justice sector.Last published 23 October 2017
