George Municipality celebrates International Disability Day
The George Municipality’s department of Community Development Services celebrated the International day of people with disabilities on the 9th December 2016. They took the opportunity to acknowledge every person in the community that is living with a disability.
Ald. Mercia Draghoender, Portfolio Councillor for Community Development, said “there is plenty to celebrate and to be proud of, to be disabled does not mean you must give up on your dreams; it is just the beginning of something new, something you may don’t even know about.”
Draghoender noted that on 3 December 1992, persons with disabilities gained recognition of their rights across the world, and with that, their rightful place in society.
Disability groups who work with the Community Development department as well as Service Clubs under the George Municipality, which includes United at heart from Touwsranten, attended the function.
The day was a success with the programme being directed by Ald. Draghoender with performances by young and upcoming Drama Artists from Thembalethu displaying how abuse takes place in a family situation and communities.
The women from the Service Clubs sang for the disabled community on the day, before a meal was served by the Gender and Disability Subsection of Community Development.
